Signs of Spring - February

As the days start to lengthen and occasional warmer days appear, February is a great time to take a moment and enjoy nature.  Spring is starting and with it the feel of new beginnings is strong.  When you are out and about why not take a moment to look for these classic signs of spring.

Nesting Birds

As the days get longer, Blue Tits start searching through gardens for the best nest sites to bring up their young.  Blue Tits are especially keen on Nest Boxes and can even take up residence as soon as one is put up.  When they make a nest, they make a small cup shaped nest that can hold up to 16 eggs!  It's not too late to put up a Nest Box now to help your feathered friends as they look for their nest site for the season.

Frogs

It doesn't take much of an increase in temperature for frogs to leave hibernation.  As the continue to have warmer winters, there is always the possibility of frogspawn as early as February.  This is most likely to happen in the more southern and warmer parts of the UK, but really just need s prolonged warm period and a sunny pond!  Why not get your froggy friends in the garden a brand new home to help them thrive.  The Frogilo is a great addition to any pond area.

Bird Song

Bird Song is the perfect remedy to pick you up out of those winter blues.  It tends to be strongest in the early morning and before dusk, however this is by no means the rule.  Day time song is often heard from blue tits, great tits, greenfinches and chaffinches.  Whilst robins, song thrushes and blackbirds will be heard as dusk approaches.  They sing because mating is on their mind, with some mistle thrushes even nesting this month. Those that have broods early, sometimes have a second one later in the year.

Buzzing bees

As the first sunny days appear, Bumblebees are also encouraged out of hibernation.  Siting in silence with the warmth on your face and just the sound of the buzzing bees is a great way to relax at this time of year.  As the temperature rises, large queens will take nectar from early flowers such as crocuses and start looking for a good spot to raise the next generation.  Attracting bees to your garden is one of the best ways to help the environment and nature.  February is an excellent time of year to put a new home for bees in your garden.  Take a look at our great range here
