Signs of Spring - March

March is the time of year when spring really starts to appear across the country.  Spring flowers appear and bird song gives the perfect backing track as the first of the summer visitors reach our shores.  Things to look out for include

Chiffchaffs & Wheatears

Often the first of our summer visitors to arrives.  Some will stay all year, but numbers increase during March as those that winter elsewhere return.  The  first summer visitor to arrive from Africa is often the wheatear. It is a striking bird, with the carrying a pale orange chest and black and white eye stripes, it manages to do a great impression of a bandit.  The will travel to breed in the uplands or rocky coasts in the early part of the month.  However you can get a glimpse of them almost anywhere as the pass through.  The classic giveaway is their white rear that shows best when in flight.

Spring Flowers

Daffodils, Blue bells, and the primrose, give an early burst of spring colour. Their nectar is just as important as it gives a timely feats to bumblebees and butterflies as they emerge from hibernation

Bird Song

The Blackbird really starts to sing during March and their flutey notes are a classic reminder of warmer times to come.  Blackbirds will be amongst the first to start singing in the morning, before other birds such as tits and fincehs take over later in the day.

The male blackbird starts to sing at the start of the breeding season running from roughly early March to late July, although weather can change these dates either forward or back.  If started early, they can raise up to 4 broods in a year.  Their nests of classically in trees, shrubs and climbers, but can nest inside buildings and sheds is suitable.

Migrating Toads

Maybe not quite as cute, but just as importantly, UK toads will start to migrate back to their breeding sites.  Unlike frogs who often spend most o thier time near or around water, Toads can be found across the countryside, wherever they have suitable places to hide and hibernate in log piles, burrow, or leaf litter.  It is the mild but wet weather during this time of year that the Toads are waiting for before they all start their travels.  Do take care when out and about during weather like this and try to avoid disturbing or harming them, a road is no barrier to a Toads migration!

Butterflies flutterby

Small Tortoiseshells, Peacocks, and Red Admirals all hibernate in teh UK when adults and are usually the first to appear in UK gardens.  Searching for early flowering plants to feed.  They especially like crocuses, narcissus (not the deep trumpet type and dandelions.  As if so often the case with insects, If you want early butterflies, let your weeds grow!
