Characteristics
The Oxford Sandy and Black is named for its colouring. It has a rust (or sandy brown) coloured skin with black patches across its body, It is noted for being particularly striking and attractive compared to many other native British pig breeds. Despite having a docile temperament, it is hardy and well suited to outdoor rearing. Its coloured skin helps to protect it from the sun unlike pink pigs.
History
The Oxford Sandy and Black pig breed is one of the oldest in Britain and was first was established around 300 years ago in the county of Oxfordshire. Despite nearing extinction twice it has survived although still quite few in number.
Other names for the breed include "Plum Pudding" in reference to its colouring and spots, or "Oxford Forest pig" due to its origins.
Uses
The Oxford Sandy and Black pig is known for Producing bacon, ham and other pork meat. All of which is tender with a strong flavour.
Its hardy yet docile nature makes it ideal for small holders and those running extensive farming operations outdoors. It's skin colouring also acts as a natural sun protection.
