The Farming Year - January

January on the farm is surprisingly busy.

It is the perfect time to start spreading slurry on fields to boost silage or hay production that will be harvested later in the year.  A ground frost is perfect for this as it makes the ground more suitable for heavy machinery

Calves start to be weaned towards the end of January, moving onto concentrates and sugar beet.

Sheep will be fed sugar beet and sheep nuts on a daily basis, with hay often being given should there be frost or snow on the ground.

On top of these productive jobs, the more mundane task of farm maintenance is done; maintaining and servicing machinery, general repairs, cleaning, and painting.  ready for the busy year ahead.
