Sheep Breeds in Focus - Welsh Mountain

Welsh Mountain Sheep

One of the oldest breeds in the world.  The Welsh Mountain is a breed full of vigour and is a very lively breed.  They very hardy and able to endure extremes of rain, snow, and wind.  Welsh Mountain Sheep are very small in the body with very large and impressive fleeces, but known to be wonderful mothers and protective over their young.  They are true mountain sheep and very suited to the harsher environment of the mountains than that found on the valley floor.

References to them date as far back as the 14th and 15th centuries and the are described pretty much as we see them today.  Small with white faces white, that are often mottled with pale tan.  The fleece is thick and full and great source of durable wool.

Commercially they are an excellent source of durable wool and they are famed for their milk.
