Characteristics

The Large White is a big pig breed.  It is white in colour, with picked ears and its face is slightly dished.  It has a lean body with little fat

History

The large white, originally bred in Yorkshire during the 19th century and first recognised in 1868.  It is often used for cross breeding with other breeds and is used commercially world wide.  It greatly benefitted from the introduction of a policy in the 1950s to concentrate the British pig industry into 3 main breeds including the Large Whites, the Welsh, the British Landrace. The Large White is as a result one of the most numerous of all pig breed.

Uses

The Large White is used around globally on commercial and intensive pig farms.  The increasing demand for leaner meat has only increased their value and popularity.  It is also used extensively for cross breeding with other breeds to produce leaner meat with different characteristics.  Its large size and lean body make it perfect for large scale production especially well known for its bacon with low levels of fat.
