Dog Safety - Spring Cleaning

With the change in the weather and the start of spring, many of us get the urge to give our homes deep clean ready for the summer ahead.  For those with pets, household hygiene is arguably even more important.  However it does bring with it, its own unique dangers for our pets.

Whilst most modern cleaning products will taste and smell unpleasant to dogs, they often come in bright and interestingly shaped bottles.  These can simply be interesting to the dog, or appear to be just like a perfect addition to their toy or dog chew collection.  Inevitably should this happen the chances of them ingesting dangerous chemicals is extremely high.

To avoid this take the simple step to make sure now cleaning products are left within a dogs reach, and restrict access to any area that s being or has recently been cleaned.  Should a dog walk over a floor with cleaning product on or get some on their fur they will naturally groom themselves and lick the substance off.

Here are some of our other top tips to help keep your dogs safe whilst you have the cleaning groove on.

  • If leaving bleach in a toilet, always put the lid down and close the bathroom door. to prevent your dog accessing it.
  • Some of the most harmful products are oven and drain cleaners.  Ensure you dog has zero access to the room when these are being used and ensure any spills or used product is always toughly cleaned up.

What to do if your dog eats cleaning product

If in the unfortunate instance that your dog does come into contact with or ingest any cleaning products do not try to make them sick. This is because their vomit may be frothy or foamy and get into their lungs causing even more damage.  Seek veterinary assistance immediately and don't forget to take the details of the product with you (the best think to do is take the bottle to show the vet.
