The final month of the year, December for most is filled with celebration and Christmas cheer. Farmers however also have lots of jobs to do whilst battling increasing falling temperatures.
Arable farmers are still ploughing fields, with reduced daylight causing the day to be shortened. Some key cereal crops can be sprayed during December, with examples including wheat and maize.
Maintenance jobs become increasingly an important part of the working day, especially for those with dry stone walls that need attention or building.
For livestock farmers Christmas day will start just like any other as they are feeding their animals daily, especially those which are housed as they have no access to grazing. Dairy farmers also have the added task of milking which must be done every day no matter what is happening.
